Update: While uploading the file, the option “Convert text from PDF or image files to Google Docs documents” is removed from Google Docs.
In my previous post, I have written a post on How to convert files in Google Docs. However, most of our readers ask how they could convert PDF and OCR files using Google Docs. Previously, there was an option by Google Docs while uploading the PDF and image file; you can specify to convert text from PDF and image file. However, currently, when you upload the file, Google Docs is not prompting with any popup option to be selected by the user. It seems like Google automatically takes care of the conversion of such file types. Since most people are interested in knowing the steps to convert OCR or PDF format to other formats, we decided to write a specific article for these file-type formats.
Supported File Types of Google Docs:
- For spreadsheets: .xls, .xlsx, .ods, .csv, .tsv, .txt, .tab
- For documents: .doc, .docx, .html, plain text (.txt), .rtf
- For presentations: .ppt, .pps (.pptx and .ppsx is not supported)
- For drawings: .wmf
- For OCR: .jpg, .gif, .png, .pdf
Instructions:
1.) Open Google Doc, Sign in with Google Account ID
2.) Upload Document to Google Doc or Create Document.
Note: There are some restrictions on the size of the file to be uploaded
3.) Now Put a Checkmark on “Convert text from PDF or image files to Google Docs documents” and Upload the file.
By default, Google Docs handles PDF and image files to convert them into text. You can download the file in a different file format from the Download option under the File menu.
